twitter follower differencing tool

TwitDiff is offline until further notice.

Due to exorbitant price increases by Google for their App Engine product, it is no longer viable to run TwitDiff there. Unfortunately migrating from App Engine requires significant code changes, which require time.

Please accept my apologies for the disruption to service, things should be back to normal (and running from a sane hosting provider) in a week or two.

TwitDiff provides e-mail and RSS notification for accounts unsubscribing from your tweets. It is designed to work reliably with almost any size of follower list, and without exhausting API quota. A notification that describes all unfollows is produced every 12 hours to 30 days, whatever you choose.

Initial release. If your follower count drops and you aren't notified, tell me. This only means that TwitDiff is in testing, and might miss a notification — it will never delete your followers!

  • TwitDiff will never advertise through your account, or modify it without permission.
  • Pinpointing messages that caused unfollows will never be supported, since it is impossible to reliably infer this information.

Why must I sign in?

TwitDiff accesses Twitter through your account to ensure reliability and fairness, since access to a limited resource is charged to individual accounts. There are three approaches to Twitter access:

  • Anonymous access is unsuitable since TwitDiff could only make up to 100 checks per hour. If any users had unfollows this would be even less, since it must also fetch profile information.
  • Shared accounts may work after asking Twitter for a quota increase, however things break when someone with many followers, like Oprah Winfrey signs up: the shared quota could be exhausted processing Oprah's changes, all day.
  • Individual account: this is how TwitDiff works. In exchange for secure access to your account, all access is charged to the individual, allowing you the same level of service as Oprah.

You can revoke TwitDiff's access at any time. TwitDiff doesn't know your password, or possess control of your account.
